How Can We Explain the Mystery of the Holy Trinity?

  • In this Trinity there is no intrusion of any alien element or of anything from outside, nor is the Trinity a blend of creative and created being. It is a wholly creative and energizing reality, self-consistent and undivided in its active power, for the Father makes all things through the Word and in the Holy Spirit, and in this way the unity of the holy Trinity is preserved.

  • The Father does not create the Son and then, with the Son, create the Spirit.  No, the Father eternally generates the Son.  And with and through the Son, this Father eternally “breathes” the Spirit as a sort of personalized sigh of love.  “As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.”  That’s what the conclusion of the Glory Be really means, that the self-giving of the three divine persons did not begin at a moment in time, but was, is, and is to come.

"To condescend to the humblest duties, and to devote oneself to the lowliest service is an exercise of humility: for thus one is able to heal the disease of pride and human glory."
